Final home series for Penn State women’s ice hockey marks the end of an era

In February of 2012, construction on Pegula Ice Arena had begun.

Josh Brandwene and Guy Gadowsky had been hired as the head coaches of the women’s and men’s ice hockey teams, respectively, and student-athletes had been recruited.

“Where we’re standing right now was a parking lot,” Brandwene said in a hallway at Pegula. “It was still just a blueprint, it was still a dream. The program was still an idea and this rink wasn’t even here yet.”

That freshman class in 2012 — now the graduating class of 2016 — was about to begin its career as the first Nittany Lion Division-I collegiate ice hockey players.
