Senators choose 'really safe pick' in Shane Bowers

CHICAGO — It was worth the wait for Shane Bowers Friday night as he pulled on his Ottawa Senators jersey.

The 6-foot-2 centre, who was born in Halifax and had a lot of family on hand at the United Center on Friday night for Round 1 of the NHL entry draft, spent last season with the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League. He was selected No. 28 overall by the Senators in the first round.

Bowers finished 10th in the league in scoring with 22 goals and 51 points in 60 games.

Bowers said going to the USHL was a good decision.
