Scoring first is key to Senators' success

If one particular regular-season trend continues into the playoffs, there could be no stopping the Senators this spring.

If they can keep drawing first blood, they can win the Stanley Cup.

Entering Tuesday night, only four teams in the league had won more than three quarters of their games after scoring the first goal.

Topping the list was the Senators, who had a .818 winning percentage (27-4-2), followed by the Washington Capitals’ .769 (40-7-5), the Chicago Blackhawks’ .761 (35-8-3) and San Jose Sharks’ .756 (31-9-1).

The Senators scored first Tuesday night in Philadelphia before an uncharacteristic third period collapse resulted in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Flyers.
