There are always statistical oddities in the opening days of the National Hockey League season.
For one, a pair of defencemen — San Jose’s Brent Burns and the Senators’ Erik Karlsson — were sitting atop the NHL points race heading into Thursday’s games.
And then there’s the case of the Senators left winger Mike Hoffman, who has led the Senators in goals for the past two seasons and is fresh from signing a four-year, $20.75-million extension in the summer.
While the Senators have showcased an explosive offence by scoring 16 goals in their opening four games — tied for second in the NHL in goals per game — Hoffman has yet to score himself.
