-- Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser picked up in 2017 where he left off in 2016.

Crouser, who prepped at Barlow High School in Gresham, won the Big Shot competition Sunday in Christchurch, New Zealand with a monster throw of 72 feet, 4 1/4 inches (22.05).

His winner answered a put of 70-5 by New Zealander Tom Walsh, which gave Walsh a brief lead.

Crouser told the New Zealand Herald he wasn't expecting a mark that big this soon.

"That surprised me a little bit," Crouser said. "I was feeling pretty good and Tom opened up well early, so he kind of pushed me me to step up and make a big throw.
