Michael Johnson, Father Of Top 2019 QB, Hired At Oregon Instead Of Michigan

Michael Johnson, the former head football coach at The King's Academy in California, has reportedly been hired by new Oregon Ducks head coach Willie Taggart as their wide receivers coach after initial reports indicated that Johnson was being hired by Michigan.

Johnson spent 10 seasons coaching in the NFL with the ChargersAtlanta FalconsBaltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, where he was the offensive coordinator in 2010.

However, the hiring is being viewed as controversial since Johnson's son, Michael Johnson Jr., is the top-ranked dual threat quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class, according to 247sports. Many see Johnson's hiring as a way to get the inside track on recruiting Johnson Jr.

SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum criticized Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh when it appeared that the elder Johnson was joining the Michigan staff, describing the hire as "cheating" and that it was Harbaugh's way to gain a huge recruiting advantage. Harbaugh hired back at Finebaum, saying he needed to "get his facts straight," which is that Johnson was hired at Oregon instead of Michigan.

Johnson Jr. is ranked as the No. 73 overall prospect in the 2019 class, with Michigan and Oregon being his top two schools.
