ODU honors Simms and Rutherford as top athletes of 2016-17

Women's basketball standout Jennie Simms and Zach Rutherford, a baseball star from Western Branch, were named the Old Dominion University Alumni Association Athletes of the Year at Monday night's athletic banquet.

Lee Dumaliang (sailing) and Raquel Couto (women’s swimming) were named the recipients of the Jack Wilkins/James Howard Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Simms, an honorable mention AP All-American, became the first ODU women's basketball All-American since Shareese Grant in 2005. She finished second in the nation in scoring (26.0 points per game), was named the Conference USA Player of the Year and was a second-round pick in this year's WNBA draft.
