Monarchs rally for win in C-USA baseball tourney opener

Old Dominion scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to rally for a 3-2 victory over Florida International in its opening Conference USA tournament game.

With the Monarchs (37-19) trailing 2-1, Zach Rutherford’s RBI single tied the game and Kurt Sinnen’s bases-loaded walk pushed across the go-ahead run.

“It's really just keep doing what we've been doing all season," said Rutherford, a Western Branch High graduate. "Just keep battling all 27 outs and keep playing the game the whole time. Today, we just came out on top.”

Reliever Craig Lopez (7-2) got the win, getting the final two outs of the eighth inning.
