Jack Baker leaves an unprecedented legacy of success and dedication at Maury

Perhaps it was God's will or maybe it was chance. Regardless, so many things happened in Jack Baker's life to steer him on the path to coach basketball at Maury High School that clearly it was his destiny.

Baker told The Virginian-Pilot earlier this week that he's finally hanging up his whistle, retiring after 44 years at Maury, including 41 as the varsity coach. He won 746 games – the third most of any coach ever at a Virginia high school – and 19 district titles and six Eastern Region crowns.

Almost no one stays at one school for four decades.
