Newcastle will not stop Ian Cathro from joining Hearts if Scottish club come calling after Robbie Neilson exit

Newcastle United will not stand in Ian Cathro's way should Hearts step up the pursuit of their No 1 target to replace Robbie Neilson.

The Tynecastle club have agreed a compensation deal with MK Dons to clear the way for Neilson and his assistant Stevie Crawford to head south to join the League One side.

Now they are closing in on a replacement with Cathro, a key member of Rafa Benitez's backroom staff, still topping the Edinburgh club's wanted list.

Benitez has tipped the young Scot for a 'great future' in management, describing him as 'a great young coach with good experience'.
