Newcastle United accused of a 'cover-up' over George Ormond sex abuse

Newcastle United have been accused of a 'cover-up' after former player Derek Bell told them in 1998 that he had been sexually abused by a coach working at the club.

George Ormond was later convicted in 2002 of abusing Bell and six others at Montagu and North Fenham Boys Club in the late 1970s and was sentenced to six years in prison.

But four years before Ormond's trial, Bell — who played three times for Newcastle in 1982 — had approached the club after learning that his abuser was working with youngsters at the academy.

He spoke to a youth-team coach who subsequently informed the club's hierarchy, but no internal investigation was undertaken and the police were not informed.
