Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote has held talks with Sporting Gijon over a potential free transfer.
The Spanish side's sporting director Nico Rodriguez has held talks with the 30-year-old's representatives in a bid to persuade the 30-year-old to shun advances from other clubs.
Gijon are third from bottom in La Liga with only 12 points from 17 matches, and are looking to add to their squad for a relegation battle after Christmas.
Tiote saw moves to China and Turkey break down last summer, and is keen for a way out of Newcastle having made just two appearances this season.
