Betances can’t save Girardi head-scratcher in costly collapse

BOSTON — The virus that thrives inside the Yankees’ bats traveled to the bullpen Friday night.

That’s when Dellin Betances gave up a two-run, opposite-field homer to David Ortiz in the eighth inning that carried the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory in front of 37,115 at a chilly Fenway Park where the first-pitch temperature was 47 degrees.

Joe Girardi’s decision to let Masahiro Tanaka face Jackie Bradley Jr. certainly shaped the outcome because Bradley delivered a two-run double that tied the score, 2-2, in the seventh.

As for the Yankees’ bats, well, they entered the night having scored 37 runs in 15 games.
