August 25, 1996: Yankees honor Mickey Mantle, lose to A’s 6-4

Prior to today’s game with the Oakland A’s, the Yankees honored the late Mickey Mantle with a monument in Monument Park. Only three other Yankees have been monumentalized – Miller Huggins, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.

“This is great day for us,” said David Mantle, one of Mantle’s three surviving sons, “and a sad one, too.” (Via NY Times). It’s been over one year since Mantle passed last summer.
