Yankees Rumors Roundup: The Latest On Troy Tulowitzki, James Shields, & More

The New York Yankees made one of their first splashes of the offseason last week, dealing third baseman Martin Prado to the Miami Marlins for RHP Nathan Eovaldi and first baseman/outfielder Garrett Jones.

What other moves does Yankees GM Brian Cashman have in store with spring training just a couple months away? Where does rumor separate from fact? We’ll answer these questions and more in our latest Yankees Rumors Roundup!

TROY TULOWITZKI

The Yankees have reportedly "checked in" on Tulowitzki, and are hoping to make a deal with the Rockies. However, they aren't willing to give up the top young prospects the Rockies will want in return. New York also doesn't to give up any of their pitching, which could lead to standstill in talks between the two clubs.

JAMES SHIELDS

New York might not be willing to give Scherzer the $200+ million contract he's expecting, but they aren't scared away by the five-year, $110 million deal Shields is looking for. The Yankees are fighting with the Giants, Red Sox, and the incumbent Royals for Shields, though are in the back of the pack for now.

If Cashman wanted to utilize the team's deep pockets, New York could jump to the forefront of the race to land the star pitcher. What might cause the Yankees to walk away from the table is the fact that Shields is 33, and Cashman has showed so far this offseason that he's weary of signing older players, especially to long-term deals.

OTHER NOTES

The Miami Marlins claimed pitcher Preston Claiborne off waivers from the Yankees with an available spot on their 40-man roster. Claiborne has logged 71 1/3 innings for the Yankees over the past two seasons with a 3.79 ERA with 7.3 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9.
