Yankees Rumors: Max Scherzer, Cole Hamels, James Shields options in NY's search for pitching?

The New York Yankees have been awfully quiet this offseason, especially when it came to the recent MLB winter meetings in San Diego.

However, according to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York, the team's need for starting pitching could be enough for general manager Brian Cashman to pull off a post-winter meetings blockbuster:

Maybe losing McCarthy means gaining a Max Scherzer or a James Shields. General manager Brian Cashman has said throughout the offseason that starting pitching was a priority. And if he balks at paying the kind of money those two are sure to demand, there a few second-tier, and better, pitchers out there who might be acquired in a trade. The Phillies, in full-fire sale mode, are shopping Cole Hamels. Jordan Zimmermann might be on the block, and so might Doug Fister. And if all else fails, Josh Johnson, Colby Lewis and, yes, Chris Capuano are still awaiting free-agent deals.

There are plenty of options available for Cashman to pick and choose from. It's all going to come down to what he's willing to pay and/or part with in order to acquire one of those options.
