Yankees Rumors: Injured infielder Brendan Ryan unlikely to be active Opening Day

Yankees rumors have been dominated this offseason with questions regarding the relative strengths and weakness of their infield. Now, it looks like the questions could get a little louder for the NY Yankee...at least for time being.

According to ESPNNewYork.com's Wallace Matthews, New York Yankees utility infielder Brendan Ryan may be sidelined past Opening Day with his current back injury --

The New York Yankees acquired Brendan Ryan in a late-season trade with the Seattle Mariners last season for a player to be named later. Ryan hit just .220 with one home run and one RBI for the Yankees in 17 games, but his stellar defensive prowess earned him a 2-year, $5 million contract with the NY Yankees this offseason.

Brendan Ryan has played the majority of his professional career at shortstop, but the NY Yankees utility man can also spot at second base, third base, left field, and right field -- making the seven-year MLB veteran a valuable and flexible commodity for a Yankees franchise who has been fielding questions about their depth up the middle all offseason long.
