Yankees News: Yankees open to A-Rod return "if he can still play"

In today's Yankees news update, with exiled New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez finally clearing all the legal roadblocks which he had surrounded himself with this offseason, the Yankees are now open to a potential A-Rod return for the 2015 MLB season.

Per Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York, "Rodriguez dropped his malpractice lawsuit against Yankees' team doctor, Chris Ahmad, and New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. It is the final of three separate lawsuits, Rodriguez filed that involved the Yankees, Major League Baseball, Commissioner Bud Selig and the Players Association."

The other two lawsuits were dropped in February, after an arbitrator reduced his original 211-game suspension to 162.

After the 2014 season, Rodriguez is eligible to come back for the final three years of his 10-year, $275 million contract. He is currently slated to make $61 million over that span, along with $6 million extra if he hits six more home runs to tie Willie Mays with 660 career long balls.

According to a source close to ESPN New York and the Yankees, the club will welcome A-Rod back "if he can still play."

"He is under contract so you kind of expect him to be back," Yankees manager Joe Girardi stated, via Marchand's article on Friday. "Obviously, sitting out a year, as players have seen, is not the easiest thing to do. You have to try to stay as prepared as you can, doing whatever it takes to stay prepared."

From the sound of it, the 39-year-old Rodriguez is attempting to do just that.

"All legal matters have been resolved and Alex looks forward on the field in 2015," Rodriguez's spokesperson Ron Berkowitz said.

"Alex is working out and looking forward to 2015."
