Yankees News: Joe Girardi challenges first call via replay in Yankees history

Come Spring Training, Yankees news is usually focused on both free agent possibilities and free agents already acquired. Very rarely do the actual games have any resonance.

Until today.

For the first time in the storied history of the New York Yankees, Yankees manager Joe Girardi made use of Major League Baseball's new instant replay system on Thursday with the Tigers visiting Steinbrenner Field.

The call in question was a groundball hit by NY Yankees' Brian Roberts to second base in the seventh inning of the Yankees 7-7 tie (10 innings) with the Tigers. Roberts was called out, and manager Joe Girardi immediately made the decision to dispute the call utilizing the new instant-replay system.

The replay showed without any question that Roberts was out, meaning that the first instant replay in New York Yankees history was indeed an unsuccessful one.

The New York Yankees second baseman had a bit of a chuckle after the game about the situation--“I would’ve told him not to...I appreciate the effort, though.”

This is the second time that Brian Roberts has landed in the trivia section of NY Yankees lore.

The first?

On September 21st, 2008, Roberts grounded to first against future Hall-of-Famer Mariano Rivera for the final out in the history of the old Yankee Stadium.
