Yankees News: Alex Rodriguez Apologizes To Yankees

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez met with team owner Hal Steinbrenner and team executives on Tuesday to apologize for his performance-enhancing drug use that led to a season long suspension and for his hostility when defending himself.

"Today we held a meeting at Yankee Stadium between Hal Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, Brian Cashman, Jean Afterman, Alex Rodriguez and Jim Sharp," the Yankees said in a statement. "Alex initiated the meeting and apologized to the organization for his actions over the past several years. There was an honest and frank discussion on all of the issues. As far as the Yankees are concerned, the next step is to play baseball in spring training."

ESPNNewYork.com reports that the Yankees "made it known that he had to make up for his behavior" and plan to dispute his home run bonuses, which could save them $30 million.

Rodriguez has $61 million left on his contract over the next three seasons, which could balloon to $91 million with the home run money. He expected to start at DH for New York, who re-signed Chase Headley to take over at third base - Rodriguez's old position.
