Trending Yankees News - Yankees to sign free agent Kendrys Morales?

In tonight's Yankees news bulletin, the New York Yankees may be emerging as a prime contender to land the services of free agent slugger Kendrys Morales.

Per Doug Rush of Yankees101.com, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal believes that the Yankees present the best possible fit for Morales:

"Morales, though, would be a defensive upgrade over McCann or Kelly Johnson, both of whom have filled in at first during Teixeira’s absence," Rosenthal said. "In addition, the Yankees would not need Morales to play defense every day, presuming that Teixeira was healthy; they also could use him as a designated hitter."

If the Yankees are to sign Morales prior to the June 5th MLB Draft, they would owe the Seattle Mariners a compensatory draft pick after Morales rejected a qualifying offer from the M's earlier this offseason.

However, if the Yankees are to wait until after June 5th, Morales would gain some leverage in contract negotiations due to not having that draft pick hanging over his signing.

Basically, the Yankees have three options: leave Morales alone, give up the 55th pick in the draft to sign him this week, or wait until price is driven up after the draft and outspend their competition.
