Report: CC Sabathia to have season-ending knee surgery

In this breaking Yankees rumors and news update, New York Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia will be out for the year after a season-ending knee surgery scheduled for next week.

According to Newsday's Erik Boland, the surgery will not be for a fracture as initially feared:

Sabathia was examined by Dr. James Andrews on July 14, with speculation swirling that the lefty's career could come to an end in light of a potential microfracture in his left knee. The rehab for such an injury is long and arduous, and at Sabathia's age, could have spelled the end of his MLB career.

With the procedure now being termed as a "cleanup" operation, the potential for a quicker return and rehabilitation process now presents itself.

The soon-to-be 34-year-old Sabathia was 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts before being sidelined earlier this year. He is guaranteed $23 million in salary this year and next with his pay bumping up to $25 million in 2016. There is also a $25 million vesting option with a $5 million buyout in his deal for 2017 that can become guaranteed.
