Chicago - In a script that is all too familiar in the dizzy, daffy world of George Steinbrenner's Yankees, Yogi Berra was fired as manager yesterday after 16 games of the season and Billy Martin was named to take charge for the fourth time, joining the team today in Texas.

Yankee players reacted with anger and bitterness upon learning the news. Don Baylor, a critic of the way Martin handled the club during his stormy last term in 1983, glanced at the news release, then picked up a trash container and heaved it across the room, scattering debris through the clubhouse.
