Rangers GM: Why only half a rebuild was best option

More changes might have been expected. More changes might have been desired after the Rangers were pummeled by the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs last season — the Blueshirts’ earliest exit in five years — but general manager Jeff Gorton only could make so many moves in one offseason.

Even if the salary cap and certain contracts weren’t an issue, Gorton said he doesn’t believe wiping all remnants of one of the most successful cores in franchise history would have made the most sense.

“There were a lot of people that thought we could make a wholesale change to everything, but I think we’re comfortable with our roster right now,” Gorton said Saturday at the team’s training facility.
