Terry Collins diagnoses Jay Bruce: It’s all in his head

That mental health day didn’t help Jay Bruce much. The struggling right fielder singled in his first at-bat Sunday against the Phillies, but struck out in his final three trips to the plate, and has now whiffed in seven of his last eight at-bats.

Since coming over to the Mets in a trade for prospect Dilson Herrera on Aug. 1, Bruce has produced just two home runs, six RBIs and a .164 batting average in 23 games, while striking out 26 times.

“He’s trying to do too much,” manager Terry Collins said after the Mets’ 5-1 loss at Citi Field.
