Mets summon Nieuwenhuis to bolster bench

SAN FRANCISCO -- Seeking to improve their bench, the Mets on Monday selected the contract of outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas, and optioned Darrell Ceciliani there.

Nieuwenhuis began this season on the Mets' active roster before the team designated him for assignment, traded him to the Angels and then claimed him back off waivers.

Overall this year, Nieuwenhuis is batting .100 with four doubles, three RBIs and a .323 OPS in 37 games at the big league level. His numbers were far better at Las Vegas, including a .293 batting average and a .
