Knicks President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson's first big move in New York was to trade center Tyson Chandler back to the Dallas Mavericks, the team he won a championship with in 2011. Jackson thought Chandler wouldn't fit into the triangle offense, and that it was in the best interest of the team to get rid of him.
Chandler has played a key role in Dallas' 18-8 start, while the Knicks have gotten off to the worst start in franchise history (5-22).
Their paths crossed Tuesday night, and the Mavericks blew out New York 107-87 in Madison Square Garden. After the game, Chandler told ESPN he felt sorry for Carmelo Anthony and the situation he's in:
“I do because he’s a competitor,” said Chandler, who received a warm ovation from the crowd in his return to Madison Square Garden and had eight points and 14 rebounds in the win. “I laced them up and went to battle with him for the last three years and know what kind of competitor he is. I know he wants to win, and I know he’s going to take a lot of this heat. And it’s unfortunate because he’s a hell of a player in our league. It’s just unfortunate.”
Chandler is averaging 10.6 ppg and 11.6 rpg so far this season for the Mavs. Anthony is averaging 23.4 ppg and 6.6 rpg for the Knicks.
