The Isles recalled Scott Mayfield from Bridgeport (AHL) on an emergency basis Tuesday.
The term “emergency” has a negative connotation, so maybe that’s not the ideal word. But at the end of the day, the point remains: Mayfield was thrust into the starting lineup, and thrived.
With Johnny Boychuk (flu) sidelined for Tuesday night’s matchup with the Rangers, head coach Jack Capuano slotted Mayfield alongside Thomas Hickey on the team’s second pairing.
The move panned out.
The 24-year-old defenseman notched the Isles’ first goal and was solid in his own zone.
