RALEIGH, N.C.—Islanders assistant coach Doug Weight occasionally tells players about the amazing possibilities that sacrifice and humility can offer. Saturday night, he got to show them, as he was among the honorees as the Hurricanes celebrated the 10th anniversary of their 2006 Stanley Cup.

Weight, also an Islanders assistant general manager, was on that team for only a few months, but he said, “There’s still that underlying connection that is just so special.” And it is indelible, as is his name on the Cup, which was here this weekend.

He does talk to the current Islanders about the time he waived his no-trade clause from the Blues and landed in Carolina on Jan.
