Islanders Insight’s Top Shelf: Tavares, Team Canada Win 2016 World Cup of Hockey

Team Canada defeated Team Europe last night to complete the first World Cup of Hockey in more than a decade. John Tavares was an integral part of the Canadian team, contributing one goal and three assists in five contests for the host country.

For Tavares, winning gold as part of Canada is nothing new. As recent as 2014 Tavares won Olympic gold in Sochi. Unfortunately, many Islanders fans remember those Olympic games because of the season-ending injury Tavares suffered against Latvia.

The World Cup of Hockey’s intensity throughout the tournament surprised many fans whom expected the style of play to be eerily similar to preseason hockey.
