Giants Cut Weatherford, One of the Last of Their Super Bowl Winners

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Giants on Friday released punter Steve Weatherford, a popular player and one of the few remaining links in the locker room to the franchise’s last Super Bowl-winning team. Giants Coach Tom Coughlin had been sparse in his praise of Weatherford this preseason and frequently hinted that the team might be in the market for a new punter.

To replace Weatherford, the Giants traded a conditional seventh-round draft choice for Brad Wing of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wing, who punted in every game last season for Pittsburgh, became expendable when the Steelers acquired Jordan Berry.
