Saints rookie Sheldon Rankins recovering well following surgery

New Orleans Saints rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins is recovering well from an Aug. 16 surgery to repair a broken fibula suffered in training camp, a source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

Rankins, who underwent the procedure in North Carolina, is wearing a hard cast and back in New Orleans, where he will continue to be evaluated at the team's training facility in Metairie, the source said.

While initial reports forecasted Rankins' return at six weeks, there is no hard timetable for Rankins to get back on the field, the source said.

The free-agent defensive tackle should have a bigger role as long as first-round pick Sheldon Rankins is out.
