Patriots add punch, pop to lineup

Bill Belichick added more versatility to his defensive front and punched up his offense by acquiring a pair of Chicago Bears yesterday.

The Patriots signed former Chicago linebacker Shea McClellin to a three-year contract, according to ESPN. They also traded for tight end Martellus Bennett, according to a source.

McClellin was heavily linked to the Pats before the 2012 draft, but the Bears took him with the 19th pick, two selections before the Patriots reeled in Chandler Jones.

The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Boise State product can play all over the place in the front seven. Though he was drafted as a pass rusher as either a 3-4 outside linebacker or 4-3 defensive end, he only has 7.
