Patriots Rumors: Patriots to release Danny Amendola depending on draft?

In tonight's edition of Patriots rumors, the New England Patriots may consider releasing veteran wide receiver Danny Amendola this offseason depending upon which direction they decide to go in May's NFL Draft.

So says Lauren Moranor of Sports World Report, who quotes NESN.com as stating that "the Patriots are looking more and more likely to draft a wide receiver in the first round" in order to make up offensively for questions regarding Rob Gronkowski's health and the loss of Aaron Hernandez.

Moranor points out that if the New England Patriots draft a Mike Evans or Kelvin Benjamin-type receiver in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, then Danny Amendola (who has been the subject of trade rumors for the past year) could find himself out of New England --

"Amendola's 2013 season was forgettable. The wide receiver struggled with health the entire season and still may have to undergo surgery at some point for a groin issue. His chemistry with Brady clearly struggled as a result and he failed to live up to the contract he signed in the offseason...If the Patriots grab a rookie in the first round, moving on from Amendola cannot be ruled out."

While the logistics of this may not make perfect sense financially, if Patriots coach Bill Belicheck believes Amendola may hinder the team's growth rather than help it, it is possible that the former St. Louis Rams standout could be playing elsewhere in 2014.
