Thomas Newton’s mom visited her son in Reno last weekend when the topic turned to tuition.
Newton, a Las Vegas native, walked on to the Wolf Pack football team prior to the 2013 season and had been on one-year scholarships the last two years. But with a new coaching staff running the program, a scholarship for his senior season was no guarantee. Newton remembers telling his parents that last spring after Jay Norvell was hired to run the program, but his parents must have forgotten.
“I talked to them and thought they were completely fully aware that tuition was not paid for this semester,” Newton said.
