Pack distance runner Erika Root now cancer free

Wolf Pack distance runner Erika Root, who was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma – the most advanced stage – last March, is cancer free again.

The Reno High graduate, profiled in the RGJ in April, fell ill just hours after running a personal best in the 3,000 meters in last year's Mountain West indoor track and field championships in February. A battery of tests revealed cancer and she began six months of chemotherapy treatments on March 23.

Just 22 at the time of her diagnosis, Root called the initial news “Earth-shattering” but her resolve in fighting the disease was an inspiration for those around the Wolf Pack family.
