Free Agents Desmond, Fowler Can Be Buy-Low Assets To Contenders

Ian Desmond and Dexter Fowler can both help contending clubs.

We’re into February now, less than a week until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, and shortstop Ian Desmond and center fielder Dexter Fowler remain on the free agent market.

Desmond, who turned down the Nationals’ qualifying offer, previously passed on a seven-year, $107 million contract extension with the Nats prior to the 2014 season. Fowler, on the other hand, declined the Cubs’ qualifying offer.

Although their respective values have plummeted as a result of being the latest victims of the qualifying offer system, both Desmond and Fowler can be valuable buy-low assets to contending teams, with the pros outweighing the cons of signing them.
