Joe Mauer's throw comes a step too late - Twins fall to Royals in 10 innings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This one stings.

Lorenzo Cain slid home just ahead of Joe Mauer's throw in the bottom of the 10th inning, handing the Twins a 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Cain had opened the inning with a double off reliever Aaron Thompson. Eric Hosmer struck out, but Cain moved up on a wild pitch.

Jarrod Dyson, who had entered the game as a pinch runner, chopped a 3-1 pitch toward first. Mauer fielded it cleanly, but his off-balance throw was not in time to catch Cain, who slid headfirst under the tag of Kurt Suzuki.
