Former Gophers football star Charlie Sanders was 'ultimate Lion'

For a decade, Charlie Sanders was one of the best tight ends in the NFL, a sure-handed pass catcher who helped revolutionize the position.

When Sanders' playing career ended in 1977, a year after the former University of Minnesota star suffered a serious knee injury, he remained a staple of the organization, first as a broadcaster, then an assistant coach, and most recently -- since 1998 -- as a member of the personnel department.

"The ultimate Lion," said Sanders' good friend, former Pistons star and ex-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

Sanders died Thursday after a seven-month battle with cancer.
