Milwaukee Brewers starting shortstop Jean Segura, who went missing from the team after the death of his nine-month old son, Janniel, has returned to Milwaukee for the beginning of the season's second half.
According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal-Sentinel, "manager Ron Roenicke provided those details Thursday morning on his weekly radio show on WTMJ-620(AM). He said Segura returned to town Wednesday night (from the Dominican Republic) and is expected to be at Miller Park for a voluntary workout this afternoon before the team leaves for a weekend series in Washington."
Roenicke indicated early on Wednesday that the team had been attempting to establish contact with Segura throughout the process, but that no calls had been returned. The team was in danger of having to shift him from the bereavement list to the restricted list if he didn't return to the team by Friday.
No one in the organization was sure of Segura's plans or whether he was even thinking about returning. However, those questions now seem to have been answered.
Per Haudricourt's report, Segura will return to the active roster and re-acclimate at his own pace.
"He's ready to go," Roenicke stated. "He needs to do this to keep his mind off of some things. He'll be back with us. I don't know that he'll be playing every day at the beginning. That's kind of up to him and how he feels. But he wants to do this."
After Segura's departure, the Brewers called up infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera to fill his roster spot. It is likely that he will be sent back down as a result of Segura's return.
