Managers are being sacked midseason more frequently due to the high stakes involved, according to Paul Mariner.

Former Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate has rejoined the club as first-team coach.

Woodgate, who had two spells with Middlesbrough as a player, is the latest addition to caretaker boss Steve Agnew's coaching staff following the appointments of Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins.

The former England international, who retired as a player at the end of last season, arrives at the Riverside Stadium following a scouting role with Liverpool, in which he took in matches in Spain and Portugal for the club.
