Stewart Downing is on the verge of a move to Birmingham City, with the deal set to be completed on Wednesday.
Despite receiving a couple of offers from La Liga, the winger looks set to join Harry Redknapp's squad with Downing's partner, who is expecting another baby in October, preferring to stay in England.
The 32-year-old has spent the week in Portugal with Middlesbrough squad but did not feature in their win over Chesterfield after picking up a knock in training.
Redknapp spoke of his admiration for the former England international over the weekend.
