LA VERGNE -- Smyrna High quarterback Alex Bannister completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Woodard with no time left to complete a dogged 34-28 comeback win on the road Friday night.
The Bulldogs had to battle back from the brink to celebrate the season-opening win over nearby rival La Vergne.
Smyrna trailed 28-7 with 5:14 left in the third and 28-14 early in the fourth quarter, and the Wolverines were driving for another touchdown after forcing and recovering a Bulldog fumble.
But on the next play after the fumble recovery, Smyrna's offensive-defensive standout Blake Watkins picked off a pass by Keianthony Conner to give his squad new life.
