Michigan Football: How A Win Over Michigan State Could Still Underwhelm

Almost everyone who had reservations about Michigan football before this season cited a common reason: The Wolverines, under Jim Harbaugh, haven’t beaten Michigan State or Ohio State.

Considering that’s a large part of what Harbaugh was brought in to do, it’s a fair criticism, even if he’s only had one crack at each.

I think there’s an implied caveat in there, though, and it’s that Michigan ultimately needs to beat a legitimate Michigan State or Ohio State before the monkey is off the back and we can move on. That’s why, unless Michigan does something spectacularly embarrassing to the Spartans on Saturday, the same criticism will still largely be in place.
