Vatican City — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh arrived at St. Peter’s Square for the general audience with Pope Francis, escorting his wife, Sarah, shortly after the Michigan players arrived to take their seats.

Harbaugh said it was “pretty exciting” as he made his way through the crowd Wednesday morning. “It’s getting more exciting by the minute.”

Harbaugh and his wife sat on the stage near the front row behind the pope and to his left, and he eagerly awaited the opportunity to meet the pope and hand him a specially designed Michigan winged helmet featuring the Italian and American flags and the number 266 for Pope Francis, the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church.
