RB Derrick Green Will Transfer From Michigan, Granted Release

Michigan Wolverines running back Derrick Green, the former #1 overall running back of the Class of 2013, will transfer from Ann Arbor after being granted his release by the university.

According to a source cited by NBC College Football Talk's John Taylor, Green was let out of his UM scholarship earlier this week. However, no official confirmation has emerged as of this writing.

“The student-athlete is the one that should be confirming his decision… as we prefer they communicate their desire to transfer/graduate and play another season elsewhere. We do not confirm those decisions as an institution,” a UM spokesperson said in an email to CFT.

Green is expected to remain in Ann Arbor until he graduates this coming spring. After that, he'll be eligible to play immediately as a grad transfer at another program.

A top-ten overall recruit in 2013, Green totaled 898 yards on 212 carries with seven touchdowns over the span of three seasons. He was in the midst of a breakout season in 2014 (471 yards, 5.7ypc) before injuries put a halt to things in the back half of the season.

The senior ran for just 157 yards in the first nine games of this season before being benched. He didn't travel with the team to the Citrus Bowl due to what head coach Jim Harbaugh termed as "an internal matter."
