Michigan Hires Boston College's Don Brown As New Defensive Coordinator

The Michigan Wolverines have hired Boston College Eagles defensive coordinator Don Brown to fill the same role in Ann Arbor, per multiple reports. The story was originally broken by Sports Illustrated's Thayer Evans.

Under Brown, Boston College had the #1 ranked overall team defense in 2015 -- an extremely impressive feat considering that the Eagles finished 3-9 and sputtered on offense all season long. How bad was the Eagles' attack? They finished second-to-last in total offense out of 128 teams in the FBS.

This is a huge hire for Michigan's Jim Harbaugh, replacing DJ Durkin who accepted the head coaching role at Maryland. A former UMass and Northwestern head coach, Brown also served as defensive coordinator for schools such as Maryland and UConn before accepting the position with Boston College. He has 34 seasons of collegiate coaching experience to his credit.

Installing what was known as a "hair on fire" defense at Boston College, Brown led a unit that gave up just 83 rushing yards a game and 253 yards overall per contest. He now joins a Michigan program which remained neck and neck with Boston College for the FBS' best total defense before a 42-13 loss to Ohio State.

No word on who Boston College may tab as his replacement. Stay tuned.
