Michigan vs. Northwestern Preview and Prediction

The Wolverines head to Northwestern for a Big Ten matchup between two teams that have struggled to get going within the conference this season.

Northwestern is looking to snap a three game losing streak, while Michigan tries to build off their dominant win over Indiana.

Records:

Michigan: 4-5 (3-5 Big Ten)

Northwestern: 3-5 (2-5 Big Ten)

Last Meeting: Michigan won 27-19 in 2013

Michigan Outlook: The Wolverines got back into the win column with a 34-10 victory over Indiana last week.

While Brady Hoke and the Michigan squad are still looking at uncertainty for the future, they've at least shown glimpses of a turnaround.

With running back Derrick Green out, sophomore running back Drake Johnson piled up 122 yards rushing and two scores last week. Green could return, although it appears that Johnson may get an extended look in the Michigan backfield until that happens.

Northwestern Outlook: The Wildcats have lost three games in a row coming into this matchup.

The offense is struggling, failing to score more than 17 points in any of those games. On the season, Northwestern is averaging just 19.1 points per game.

Freshman running back Justin Jackson has been a bright spot, rushing for 726 yards and three touchdowns this year.

What to watch for: The Michigan offensive outburst will have to prove it wasn't a fluke against a good defensive unit.

The good news for Michigan is that against a weak Northwestern offense, the Wolverines may not need to put up a lot of points to win. Look for Michigan to further evaluate Devon Gardner's progress by allowing him to make plays in a game that the Wolverines should be able to win on paper.

What they're saying:

Hoke won't rule out return for Green (Maize & Blue)

Jabrill Peppers will take medical redshirt this season (MLive.com)

Prediction:

Michigan - 27, Northwestern - 17

The Wolverines come into this game with a bit of confidence after a solid victory over Indiana. Even on the road, Michigan can pull off the victory over a Northwestern team that has really struggled during their three game losing streak.
