New York Yankees Rumors Roundup: Are The Yankees The "Mystery Team" Offering James Shields Over $100m?

Another day, another set of Yankees rumors to weed through - let's get down to business:

James Shields

Shields has a five-year, $110 million offer on the table...but no one knows who put it there. While no one can confirm the identity of this team just yet, we can narrow things down a little bit - Ken Rosenthal of FOX thinks it's the Yankees, the Angels, or the Tigers, and we'd be absolutely shocked if that offer is from a team other than one of those three.

While rampant speculation is all well and good, this news does one very good thing: by setting the bar for Shields' value, we can expect his glacial free agency saga to speed up in a major way. At this point, he might even sign before Max Scherzer. Speaking of Scherzer...

Max Scherzer

Has Scherzer effectively priced himself out of the market? While very few teams can afford him at this point, the Yankees are still in the running...and they still need to make some moves if they want their rotation to compete in next year's loaded AL East.

One insider doesn't think he'll end up in pinstripes, though - ESPN's Buster Olney predicts that Scherzer will end up signing another deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Stephen Drew

The Yankees haven't given up on landing Drew to address their needs at second base. While he's naturally a shortstop, the Yankees now have Didi Gregorius holding down that job, and Drew told agent Scott Boras last month that he'd be willing to consider playing 2B if a deal that would see him playing shortstop didn't materialize. Clearly, it hasn't.
