The significance of hosting college baseball powerhouse Cal State Fullerton this weeked has not been lost on Maryland Coach John Szefc, who aptly described this weekend’s series as a collision between old and new tradition. The Titans have won four national championships and will arrive in College Park on Friday with the rich history as one of college’s baseball’s heavyweights, meeting an upstart Maryland program that only emerged as a national contender after last season’s 40-win campaign.
But all of those decorations will be irrelevant by the time the first pitch is thrown, Szefc said after practice on Thursday, speaking as if he expected his program to be in this position when he first took the job three years ago.
